Living in a camper, RV, or tent at a local campground is a resourceful, fast way to secure immediate shelter. However, navigating local laws and seasonal shifts is critical to keeping yourself and your belongings safe. Here is a realistic look at what to expect:

Immediate Emergency Shelter: Provides a solid roof and immediate protection from harsh weather elements compared to sleeping on the street or in a standard car. Lower Initial Financial Barrier: Staying at a campground is generally much more affordable week-to-week than paying out-of-pocket for expensive Long Island motels or coming up with a traditional apartment security deposit. Access to Basic Utilities: Many established sites offer direct hookups for electricity, running water, and waste disposal stations to keep your living space functioning. A Supportive Community: Campground communities are often filled with resourceful people who look out for one another, share advice, and offer mutual support in times of crisis.
The Strict 7-Day Move Rule: Suffolk County parks enforce a strict 7-day stay limit. Critical Warning: If you do not have the money or a working vehicle to move your camper after 7 days, the county will involve law enforcement, and the town may tow your camper away along with all of your personal belongings inside it. Severe Seasonal Closures: Most Long Island campgrounds close completely to tent camping from November to April. For RVs, many sites shut off their water lines during the winter to prevent freezing, leaving you without running water during the coldest months.
