Welcome To Our Veterans Page

Veteran Northport VA hospital ER Northport NY
Homeless Long Island has not only been there in my time of need; they have also provided me with help, gaining assistance directly from the Veterans Administration.

As an OEF/OIF combat veteran, I just want all those who are interested and in need of housing assistance to know they are in great hands with any and all services provided by Homeless Long Island.

Good luck and God speed!
"OMG, What Should I Do First?"

Here’s the scoop, based on our experience helping veterans who were homeless or at risk of becoming homeless — and the success stories that followed. First, it’s absolutely okay to reach out to more than one organization at a time. In fact, collaboration between groups can lead to even better support. We worked with two separate combat veterans who each reached out to multiple organizations. One connected with Semper Fi & America’s Fund and Tunnels to Towers. The other reached out to Services for the UnderServed (S:US) and Tunnels to Towers. All of these organizations came together to help. S:US and Semper Fi covered eight days in a hotel and provided the deposit needed to secure a rental home. Tunnels to Towers committed to paying two years of rent.

Christian Combat Veterans
Leap of Faith

God’s Got Your Back, God has away of pulling us out of turmoil at just the right time. His time. You are not just a combat veteran; you are a Christian. And like paratroopers, Christians are meant to be surrounded by the enemy. But take heart—the enemy is exposed in Ephesians 6:10-18. These verses are your line of defense when there is no line, just like a paratrooper. You’re still in battle, but now your weapon is the Bible. Your suppressive fire is prayer. Your victory is in praising God. Your platoon is made up of angels and fellow Christians. Now, jump out of that plane by faith—God’s got your six! Would you like to have a relationship with God? We’re not talking about religion. We want to show you how to have a personal relationship with Him—one where you can talk to Him freely, anytime, and feel His peace and love. Say this prayer: Heavenly Father, I come before You today, weary from battles seen and unseen. I acknowledge my need for Your grace, mercy, and salvation. Lord, I surrender my burdens, my past, and my pain into Your hands. Forgive me for my sins, and cleanse my heart with Your love. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." – Matthew 11:28 Jesus, I believe You died for me and rose again so that I may have eternal life. I accept You as my Lord and Savior. Fill me with Your peace that surpasses all understanding, and guide my steps as I walk in faith. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." – John 3:16 Strengthen me, Lord, to face each day with courage and hope. Heal the wounds of my heart, body, and mind. Use my life for Your purpose, and help me to serve others with love and honor. "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." – Deuteronomy 31:6 Thank You for Your unfailing love and the promise of eternal life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,” ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭10‬:‭4‬-‭5‬ ‭ESV‬‬ Amen.

Reintegration to civilian life is the toughest challenge veterans face. This is true for those who served decades ago or in recent conflicts. Seventy percent live with chronic mental illness and substance use disorders.

The Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program prevents homelessness by helping very low-income Veterans and their families gain access to the resources they need in order to successfully transition to, or maintain, permanent housing.

Top Five Reasons You Can Overturn A Dishonorable Discharge

Top Five Reasons You Cannot Overturn A Dishonorable Discharge

Overturning a dishonorable discharge from the U.S. military is a complex legal process and depends on a variety of factors. Here are the top five reasons that can potentially lead to the overturning of a dishonorable discharge, followed by the top five reasons that would make it difficult or impossible to overturnTop 5 Reasons You Can Overturn a Dishonorable Discharge: 1. **Procedural Errors in Court-Martial**:    - If there were legal or procedural mistakes during the court-martial process, such as improper admission of evidence or a violation of the defendant's rights, it may be possible to overturn or upgrade the discharge.     2. **New Evidence**:    - If new evidence comes to light that wasn't available during the original court-martial, it could lead to a review of the case. This includes exonerating evidence or proof that changes the context of the charges. 3. **Unjust or Disproportionate Punishment**:    - If the punishment was disproportionate to the offense, or if the sentencing did not follow military guidelines, there may be grounds for an appeal to upgrade or overturn the discharge. 4. **Medical or Mental Health Factors**:    - If it can be shown that a service member was suffering from undiagnosed or improperly handled medical or mental health conditions (like PTSD or traumatic brain injury) at the time of the offense, this could be a basis for reconsidering the discharge. 5. **Ineffective Legal Counsel**:    - If a service member had ineffective or incompetent legal representation during the court-martial, this could be grounds for appeal. The service member would need to prove that the defense counsel’s performance was deficient and that this affected the outcome of the trial.

Top 5 Reasons You Cannot Overturn a Dishonorable Discharge: 1. **Clear and Convincing Evidence of Serious Crimes**:    - Dishonorable discharges are often issued for serious offenses like murder, rape, or desertion. If the evidence against the service member is overwhelming and indisputable, it is highly unlikely the discharge will be overturned. 2. **Failure to Exhaust Administrative Remedies**:    - A service member must first go through all the proper military administrative channels, such as applying to the Discharge Review Board or the Board for Correction of Military Records. Failure to do so could prevent an appeal. 3. **Time Limitations**:    - There are time limits for appealing discharges. For example, appeals to the Discharge Review Board must typically be filed within 15 years of discharge. If this time limit is exceeded, the chances of overturning the discharge are minimal. 4. **Lack of New or Relevant Evidence**:    - If no new or compelling evidence can be introduced to challenge the original court-martial's decision, the discharge is likely to remain unchanged. Appeals based on the same arguments previously rejected will rarely succeed. 5. **Conviction of a Crime in Civilian Court**:    - If a service member was also convicted of the same or similar crimes in a civilian court (especially if the crime was serious), it strengthens the justification for the dishonorable discharge and reduces the likelihood of overturning it.

Combat Veterans: Heroes Beyond the Battlefield

Our team is honored to include three courageous combat veterans each, with years of active duty and service under their belts. These heroes have shown resilience and bravery in combat, navigating the extreme pressures and life-altering challenges of deployment. Their experiences are etched into their lives, carrying stories of valor, sacrifice, and dedication that few can fully comprehend. However, their journey doesn’t end when they return from deployment—it continues through a daily battle on the home front. Many veterans face intense and often unseen struggles after service, including the lingering impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Combat changes a person, and returning to civilian life can feel like an entirely new mission, one filled with its own set of challenges. These veterans are fighting to reclaim peace, and in this battle, they show a different kind of courage—a bravery to confront and navigate through the trauma that remains long after the battlefield is behind them. Their experiences with PTSD reflect both their sacrifices and the extraordinary resilience required to face and manage these invisible wounds. Each day is a testament to their strength, as they work to heal not just themselves but also to support others who walk a similar path. These heroes are committed to breaking the stigma around mental health, standing up for themselves, their brothers and sisters in arms, and the broader community by promoting awareness, empathy, and healing. Through their actions, they continue to inspire us, proving that strength isn't just demonstrated in moments of physical battle but in every step forward in the face of post-war struggles. They are not only warriors; they are survivors, mentors, and advocates—dedicated to helping others understand the weight of their sacrifice and the depth of their courage. Their story is a reminder that service doesn’t end when the battle does. These veterans stand as pillars of resilience and hope, carrying forward the mission to support and uplift others, both within and beyond the military community.

Hero Brandan Combat Veteran

A Story of Hope: Brandan and His Service Animals. Brandan, a combat veteran living with PTSD, faced unimaginable challenges that left him homeless along with his service animals, Gunner and Easy. In his time of need, he reached out to us for help. Within an hour of his call, we met with Brandan and his dogs, providing supplies to make life on the streets a bit more bearable until a permanent solution could be arranged. These supplies included a coat for little Easy, food for both dogs, blankets, a tent, and food for Brandan himself. In just 48 hours, we connected Brandan with S:US, (Service for the underserved) an organization that not only secured him housing but also arranged a hotel stay until his home was ready. They also provided rental assistance for two years, ensuring Brandan could get back on his feet with stability and dignity. This journey of hope and recovery began with one simple phone call to HLI: 1-631-260-1363.

HUD-VASH

If your homeless or If a Veteran you know is homeless, at imminent risk of becoming homeless, or in crisis, make the call to
877-4AID-VET  (877-424-3838).

There is a reason VASH is at the bottom of our page, we had two combat veterans we were trying to get off the streets, we call the number, and spoke to the person who answered, we were told that someone will visit them with in 48 hours. Unfortunately no one ever did show. One combat veteran they said if they were to borrow the money for a hotel room, they would reimburse them. That never happened either.

Do You Have A Business in Central Suffolk?

Support Homeless and At-Risk Veterans in Nassau and Suffolk Counties

If you own or manage a business, school, or community center in Central Suffolk County, please consider placing a donation canister at your location. Your small act of kindness can make a life-saving difference.

Every day, 22 combat veterans die by suicide—some of them were homeless. Our organization is committed to supporting homeless and at-risk veterans from the moment they reach out until they are connected with long-term support services. But the first two weeks are critical—and that’s where we need your help.

Why are donation canisters so important?
When a homeless veteran contacts us, we often don’t have the immediate funds to provide safe shelter like a hotel room. The canisters help us bridge that gap—covering urgent needs like food and shelter during the time it takes to connect them with veteran support organizations.

Please help us give veterans the dignity, support, and second chance they deserve.
Place a canister. Save a life.
