Long Island, with its diverse and vibrant community, offers numerous opportunities for individuals to support those facing homelessness. From hands-on volunteering to organizing donation drives, the avenues to contribute are abundant and fulfilling.

Volunteering Opportunities:

1. Shelter Assistance: There are numerous shelters where you can volunteer your time. Along with a little bit of google research, and some phone calls. You can happily volunteer.

2. Soup Kitchens and Food Pantries: Organizations like Lighthouse mission are always seeking volunteers of any faith to come to one of ten food outreaches in Suffolk county to help hand out food to the needy. Lighthouse mission feeds 3000 families a week. Click here for more information.

3. Clothing Drives: Participating in or organizing clothing drives can provide essential items to those in need. Many local churches and community centers regularly run these drives and seek volunteers.

4. Outreach Programs: Engage with street outreach programs to distribute care packages, provide information on available resources, and offer a friendly face to those living on the streets.

Donation Drives:

1. Essential Items Collection: Organize drives to collect toiletries, blankets, and non-perishable food items. These drives can be done through schools, workplaces, or community groups, and social media.

3. Holiday Drives: Participate in holiday-specific drives, such as toy collections or special meal distributions, which can bring joy and comfort during festive seasons.

Community-Led Initiatives:

Report the Homeless — Help Us Help Them

If you see someone who appears homeless, sleeping outside, in a car, or in unsafe conditions—let us know. Your report could be the first step in connecting them with shelter, food, medical care, and long-term housing solutions.

  • Location (cross streets, landmarks, address) 

  • Date and Time spotted

  • Description (age range, gender, visible needs, photo if possible)

  • If they're alone or with others?

  • Any immediate concerns (weather danger, health condition, etc.)
