WHY ARE SOME VETERAN’S HOMELESS ? HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Updated: Feb 19, 2023

As of January 2020, Veterans make up 6 percent of the population; however, up to 8 percent of the nation's homeless population. The reasons for this vary. Regardless, it shouldn't be downplayed; one of the primary reasons for this statistic is simply because Veterans have volunteered to put not only their lives on the line physically but, they have also risked their mental health so that all US citizens may experience a better free and secure way of life. As a result of their service mentioned above, some Veterans find it challenging to re-acclimate themselves back to society. The trauma physically and mentally has many veterans with PTSD and too many homeless.

Homeless veterans have served our country in many wars over the decades, including World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. We at homeless long Island have been serving homeless veterans since 2007; a lot of them use alcohol and drugs to dull the pain. One in particular, we will call him K, served in the Gulf war and not only suffers from PTSD but was also wounded in the head. K spends his time back and forth from the streets to the VA hospital.

You can help. If you know of a veteran who is homeless or about to go homeless, please reach out to us, and they are in Suffolk or Nassau counties NY we will go to them and try to help them. Or you can call the national VA hotline, and they will send someone to help.

If you're a homeless veteran and live in Suffolk or Nassau counties in NY, let us help you, we will never force you to do anything, and we will help you with basic needs and help you be more comfortable on the streets till you're ready to get off the streets.

You can call us or call the homeless veterans hotline at (877) 424-3838 (877 4AID-VET).
