How many homeless are in Suffolk County Long Island?

Unfortunately, there's no single, definitive answer to the number of homeless individuals in Suffolk County, New York. This is due to the complex nature of homelessness and the various ways it can manifest. However, here are some relevant data points and resources that can provide a clearer picture:

Official Point-in-Time Counts:

  • The annual Point-in-Time (PIT) Count conducted by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is the official measure of homelessness. The latest available data is from January 2022, which estimated 1,117 homeless individuals in Suffolk County. This includes people staying in shelters, transitional housing, or unsheltered locations like the streets.

  • However, PIT counts are known to undercount the total homeless population due to methodological limitations.

Other Data Points:

  • Data USA reports that 21.8% of the population in Suffolk County lived with severe housing problems in 2022. This includes individuals who are:

  • Living in crowded conditions

  • Paying more than 30% of their income on housing

  • Lacking complete kitchen facilities or plumbing

  • Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) estimates that 1 in 3 single adults in Suffolk County are living outside and not in a shelter. This further highlights the prevalence of unsheltered homelessness.

Challenges in Estimating Homelessness:

  • Hidden homelessness: Many homeless individuals who aren't staying in shelters or transitional housing are invisible to official counts. This includes people couchsurfing, living in abandoned buildings, or staying with friends or family temporarily.

  • Fluidity of homelessness: People can move in and out of homelessness frequently, making it challenging to capture an accurate snapshot of the population at any given time.

Resources:

While the exact number of homeless individuals in Suffolk County remains elusive, it's clear that homelessness is a significant issue with a complex scope. By considering various data points and understanding the challenges in accurately counting the homeless population, we can gain a better understanding of the problem and work towards effective solutions
