Pros and cons of using propane heaters in tents and vans and heating a tent in winter.

Updated: Jan 9

Benefits of using propane heaters in tents and vans:

  • Provides warmth: Propane heaters can effectively heat up small spaces, providing much-needed warmth during cold weather. This can help prevent hypothermia and other health problems associated with exposure to cold temperatures.

  • Relatively inexpensive: Propane heaters are relatively inexpensive to purchase and operate, making them a more affordable option for homeless individuals compared to other heating methods, such as electric heaters.

  • Portable: Propane heaters are portable, allowing homeless individuals to easily move them with them as they relocate. This is particularly important for those who are frequently moving between different locations.

Drawbacks of using propane heaters in tents and vans:

  • Risk of carbon monoxide poisoning: Propane heaters produce carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas that can be deadly if inhaled in high concentrations. Proper ventilation is crucial to prevent carbon monoxide buildup in enclosed spaces like tents and vans.

  • Fire hazard: Propane heaters can pose a fire hazard if not used properly. They should be placed away from flammable materials and never left unattended.

  • Limited effectiveness in extreme cold: Propane heaters may not be effective in providing adequate warmth in extremely cold weather conditions.

Overall, the use of propane heaters in tents and vans by homeless individuals presents both benefits and drawbacks. While they provide a source of warmth and are relatively inexpensive, they also pose safety risks and contribute to air pollution. Homeless individuals should take precautions to minimize these risks, such as ensuring proper ventilation and never leaving the heater unattended. Additionally, alternative heating solutions, such as battery-operated heaters or thermal blankets, should be explored whenever possible.

Reality:

The video above was Mark in coram tent site. Three years ago he had to care for his mom for a few weeks. He asked me to go to his tent to grab his propane heater saying in the winter it is a life saver. Two years ago it exploded while he was sleeping and he passed away. See news article about the incident.
