What is the DSS One Shot Deal?

The DSS One Shot Deal is a one-time emergency grant provided by the Department of Social Services (DSS) in New York State. It helps families and individuals who face sudden financial crises, such as eviction, utility shutoff, or other urgent needs. This assistance is not a loan and does not require repayment.

Basic Qualifications for the DSS One Shot Deal

To qualify for the One Shot Deal, applicants must meet several criteria:

  • Residency: Must live in the county where the application is made, such as Nassau or Suffolk County on Long Island.

  • Emergency Need: The financial problem must be sudden and unexpected, like a job loss, medical emergency, or housing crisis.

  • Income Limits: Household income must fall below a certain threshold based on family size.

  • No Other Resources: Applicants should not have other means to cover the emergency expense.

  • Documentation: Proof of income, residency, and the emergency situation is required.

Income Guidelines for a Single Mom with One Child

Income limits vary by county and household size. For example, in Suffolk County, the income limit for a household of two (a single mom and one child) is roughly 150% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). As of 2024, the FPL for two people is about $19,720 annually. That means the income limit for the One Shot Deal would be around $29,580 per year.

Example Scenario

Maria is a single mother living in Suffolk County with her 7-year-old son. She works part-time and earns $1,800 per month, totaling $21,600 annually. Recently, her heating system broke down during winter, and she cannot afford the repair costs. Maria applies for the DSS One Shot Deal.

  • Household size: 2 (Maria and her son)

  • Annual income: $21,600 (below $29,580 limit)

  • Emergency need: Heating repair during cold months

  • Residency: Suffolk County resident

Maria meets the qualifications and can receive financial help to fix her heating system, ensuring her family stays safe and warm.
