What are the reasons why some homeless will not get off the streets?

Updated: May 2, 2024

Get homeless off the streets.

The homeless individuals  in Suffolk county Long Island NY situations are unique, and their reasons for staying on the streets are complex and varied. However, there are some common themes that can help us understand the challenges our brothers and sisters face:

Limited access to resources and support:

  • Lack of affordable housing: Finding truly affordable housing, especially with limited income to no income is  incredibly difficult. Especially if the homeless person doesn’t want to change their lifestyle.

  • Inadequate shelter system: Shelters may be overcrowded, have strict rules, or lack of support services. Improper security can create physical and verbal abuse. Along with theft. At the time of this blog, Maureen's haven (631) 727-6831 in Riverhead, Pax Christie’s (631) 928-9108 in port Jefferson  and  Dss emergency housing 631-854-9100 are all operating at full or close to full capacity.

  • Difficulties navigating bureaucracy: Accessing benefits and services can be complex and require a lot of time and effort.so e programs the waiting list is months to years to house someone.

Mental health and addiction challenges:

  • Untreated mental illness: Mental health conditions can make it difficult to maintain housing, employment, and relationships. Mental health makes it impossible to get someone off the streets unless they want to. To top it off no one can force them to get help. In some cases they are incapable of making a decision, the only decision they make is to say no to help.

  • Substance abuse: Addiction can be a major barrier to getting help and staying housed. Check out this blog drugs and the homeless. https://www.homelesslongisland.org/post/why-go-homeless-drugs click on this blog link about alcohol and the homeless. https://www.homelesslongisland.org/post/why-go-homeless-alcohol

Trauma and fear:

  • History of violence or abuse: Some people may be hesitant to enter shelters or transitional housing due to fear of violence or re-traumatization. We get a lot of. Alls from ladies over the age of 50 some with ptsd that refuse to go into a shelter because of the known violence and theft.

  • Fear of losing autonomy: Shelters and programs may have rules or restrictions that some people find difficult to accept. Especially the ones that restrict drinking alcohol and showing up to the shelter drunk. Https://www.homelesslongisland.org/help-with-drugs-and-alcohol

Social factors:

  • Lack of social support: Strong social connections can be a powerful buffer against homelessness, but some people may be isolated or lack a supportive network.

  • Discrimination: People experiencing homelessness often face discrimination in housing, employment, and other areas of life. They also face verbal abuse in the streets from cars passing by. Along with some store owners are just nasty and don’t want them in there store.

It's important to remember that these are just some of the possible reasons why someone might choose to stay on the streets. Each person's situation is unique and should be treated with compassion and understanding.
