Updated: Oct 21, 2024

Your tooth hurts and it’s consistent and painful, and you wish you had an ice skate to bang it out. Unfortunately you don’t.

If you have a toothache, it's important to address it promptly to alleviate pain and prevent further issues. Here’s what you can do:

Whether your homeless or just can’t afford a dentist. Take these steps below to stop the suffering.

Steps to Take for a Toothache:

1. Rinse Your Mouth: Use warm salt water to rinse your mouth. This can help reduce inflammation and clean the affected area. Food pantries or salt packs at many convenience stores have salt.

2. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help manage the pain. Be sure to follow the dosage instructions on the packaging. Sometimes you can get the pain pills free from pantries. If you go to your doctor you can get a prescription for Tylenol or ibuprofen. You can also find them cheap in the dollar store.

3. Cold Compress: Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 15-20 minutes. This can help numb the area and reduce swelling.

4. Avoid Certain Foods: Stay away from very hot, cold, sugary, or acidic foods that may aggravate the toothache. AVOID REFINED SUGAR!

5. Clove Oil: If you have clove oil, you can apply a small amount to a cotton ball and place it on the affected area. Clove oil has natural analgesic properties.

6. Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help keep your mouth hydrated and rinse away any food particles.

7. The Power of Baking Soda and Peroxide

Baking soda and peroxide have been my go-to remedy for various issues, and they work for me most of the time. If you're looking to try this out, simply head to your local dollar store to pick up some baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

To create your remedy, mix the two ingredients to form a paste. Apply it as needed, it typically takes a few days to notice improvement,

8. Dental Appointment: Most insurance companies do not cover dental. However some hospitals, like Stonybrook university hospital have dentist and dental students. If it’s a bad toothache, you can go to the emergency room. They will help you.

If you have a mild tooth ache. You can make an appointment at the Stonybrook School of medicine, learn more by clicking this link.
