How to deal with Raccoon’s in your encampment.

Updated: Nov 23, 2024

Please share your experiences with raccoons in the comments, as they may help us assist a homeless person in the future.

The video above features a homeless man who learned to coexist peacefully with raccoons, surpassing common safety practices when dealing with them.

The three cans shown were opened by a raccoon; the one on the right was fully opened, while the other two were close to being opened before the raccoon was chased away. This incident occurred at a campsite of a homeless man living in an abandoned factory.

Below are basic steps to prevent raccoons from ruining your campsite and tent:

Prevention:

- Make your campsite unappealing.

- Dispose of trash properly by double-bagging it and placing it in a secure container with a tight lid. Regularly dispose of it in designated areas.

- Minimize strong smells by avoiding scented products.

- Keep your campsite clean by not leaving food scraps or spills on the ground.

- Light a small fire as a deterrent.

- Make noise or shine a bright light to scare raccoons away.

Defense:

- Be prepared to stand your ground by yelling loudly and appearing large and threatening. Wave your arms or throw something non-harmful to scare raccoons away.

- Carry personal protection such as a personal alarm or pepper spray.

Seeking Help:

- Contact local shelters or outreach programs for assistance with pest control or secure storage.

- Reach out to animal control if you feel unsafe or unable to manage the situation.

Additional Tips:

- Learn about raccoons' behavior to predict their actions.

- Stay informed about local wildlife advisories.

- Connect with other homeless individuals for information sharing and support.

Safety is the top priority. If you feel threatened or unsure how to handle a situation, seek help from local authorities or shelters. Do not hesitate to ask for assistance when needed.
