How to submit a claim into NYS unclaimed funds.




If you believe you have unclaimed money in New York State, you can submit a claim to recover it through the New York State Comptroller's Office. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do this:


Step 1: Search for Unclaimed Money

1. Visit the New York State Comptroller's Website: Go to the official website for unclaimed funds: www.osc.state.ny.us/unclaimed-funds (https://www.osc.state.ny.us/unclaimed-funds).

2. Search for Your Name: Use the search tool to look for any unclaimed funds associated with your name or the name of a deceased relative.


Step 2: Gather Required Information

If you find unclaimed money, gather the necessary documentation to support your claim. This may include:

- Identification (e.g., driver's license, state ID, or passport).

- Proof of address (e.g., utility bill or bank statement).

- Additional documents that establish your connection to the funds (e.g., death certificate if claiming on behalf of a deceased relative).


Step 3: Complete the Claim Form

1. Download the Claim Form: If you find unclaimed funds, download the appropriate claim form from the website.

2. Fill Out the Form: Complete all required sections accurately. Ensure you provide all requested information.


Step 4: Submit the Claim

1. Send the Claim Form: Mail the completed claim form along with any required documentation to the address provided in the instructions on the form. Ensure you keep copies of everything you send for your records.

2. Online Submission: Some claims can also be submitted online through the New York State Comptroller's website, depending on the nature of the funds and your relationship to the owner.


Step 5: Await Response

After your claim has been submitted, the Comptroller's Office will review it. This process can take some time, so be patient. You may receive a confirmation of your claim and updates through mail or email.


Unclaimed funds from foreclosure sale of your house.

If you lost your house to foreclosure you may have unclaimed funds available in the county where your house is. The funds can be substantial. You will need a lawyer and about $3,000 on average for legal fees to claim the money. In this case. It takes about two years to reclaim your money.
